This week’s etsy adore feature is from Barneston!
The first print I stumbled upon by this shop was Costume Party and I figured this would be the perfect giveaway for Halloween week but I didn’t want it to be too seasonal. It had to be something you wanted to keep on display all the time! I mean, really – who can resist cute animals dressed up! Fun and whimsicle, who wouldn’t love these prints? For a child’s room or for the child at heart, Barneston has the perfect print no matter what you decide to do with it!
Tell us a little about you and your shop.
Well, my name is Dave Rapoza and I’ve been doing a lot of illustration work for a couple years now. I live in northern New Hampshire and enjoy going out walking mountain paths and checking out all the massive waterfalls. The animals and the area up here are really inspiring to me
By day, I’m a freelance artist working for all sorts of random clients on cheesy video games or books,
mostly just the typical stuff you see all over the place (warriors, wizards, half naked girls ): ).
Basically, I started the shop to really try and do something I’ve secretly always wanted to do… Cute kids’ book illustrations with all sorts of random creatures going on adventures! At first, I couldn’t really find any outlet for that sort of work but my girlfriend (loveandasandwich.etsy.com) had her etsy shop up and I had seen other people with prints on there and figured why not try and do what I’ve been waiting for on here? I’ve always loved the simple kids’ illustrations from when I was little, books like The Giving Tree and everything by Shel Silverstein. My only real goal right now though would be to get some recognition for this work so that I can really put some time into making a line of books. Something inside of me really enjoys just sitting down and trying to think up little couple line cute scenarios. I can only hope you guys like em too!
You incorporate lots of animals and monsters into your work, is there any particular reason why? Where does your inspiration come from?
First of all, monsters and animals are the best. But that’s not the only reason why. I enjoy the thought of a chubby dinosaur eating cookies (Barneston) and the fact that he’s best friends with a whale (Oggy), cat (Oscar), and hippo (Oswald). Mainly though, I just think that animals doing people things in general is irresistible. Or at least it is to me. There’s just something about whales in space and dinosaurs skateboarding that really makes me happy. A total 360 from the work I’m used to doing… Which is great!
I personally love the monsters which is why I thought Barneston would be perfect for our Halloween giveaway here at Oh How Lovely Shops, but what is your favorite in the shop right now?
Hmmm… A favorite… I have a couple at the moment if that’s ok
King Steven was one of my first Barneston illustrations and still remains one of my favorites
, I just love the hang gliding bunny. Other than that I’d have to say ‘Sleepover at Barnestons‘ and ‘Streetball‘. Those ones stand out to me just because I think they’re the funniest

My favorite print is Cocktails
What are your three favorite etsy shops?
Well I don’t know too many etsy shops as I’m mostly workin… But I do know a few I really like!
lovesandwichart.etsy.com my girlfriend’s shop but she really does make some awesome stuff!
berkleyillustration.etsy.com always loved the illustrations he has on there
Especially the animals wearing the suits!
trextshirts.etsy.com I love the conan head shirt! Also the swampthing shirt is pretty sweet.
Any last words?
Of course
! To anybody out there… Follow your dreams and go do whatever you want! If you follow what you love everything falls into place
Hope you all enjoy taking a look into Barneston’s World and hopefully get a good laugh out of it!
Dave has awesomely offered one of his prints to one lucky reader! Any print of your choice from the Barneston shop.
